Biography
29 July 1791–31 Dec. 1863. Farmer. Born in Weathersfield, Windsor Co., Vermont. Son of William Pettegrew and Phoebe. Married Elizabeth Alden. Moved to Cincinnati. Master Mason of Harmony Masonic Lodge, Oct. 1820, in Cincinnati. Moved to Kelso, Dearborn Co., Indiana, by 1830. Member of Methodist church. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Isaac Higbee, 1832. Moved to Jackson Co., Missouri, fall 1832; settled on Blue River. Moved to Clay Co., Missouri, Nov. 1833; to what became Caldwell Co., Missouri, summer 1836; to Ray Co., Missouri, 1838; to Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois, 1839; and to Commerce (later Nauvoo), Hancock Co., Illinois, 1839. Appointed member of high council in Lee Co., Iowa Territory, 5 Oct. 1839. Lived in Lee Co., 1840. Appointed counselor to John Smith in Iowa stake presidency, 24 Apr. 1841. Served mission to eastern states with Willard Snow, Sept. 1842–May 1843. Served mission to New York with John Tanner, 28 Apr.–Dec. 1844. Ordained a high priest, by 6 Nov. 1844. Moved to what became Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie Co., Iowa Territory, July 1846. Commissary sergeant in Mormon Battalion in U.S. war with Mexico, 1846–1847. Moved to Salt Lake City, Sept. 1847. Served as senator of provisional state of Deseret, 1849. Died in Salt Lake City.
