Huntington, Dimick Baker

Biography

26 May 1808–1 Feb. 1879. Farmer, blacksmith, shoemaker, constable, coroner, deputy sheriff, Indian interpreter. Born at Watertown, Jefferson Co., New York. Son of William Huntington and Zina Baker. Married Fannie Maria Allen, 28 Apr. 1830. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1 Aug. 1835. Ordained an elder at Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio. Constable at Caldwell Co., Missouri, and later deputy sheriff. Participated in skirmish at Crooked River, near Ray Co., Missouri, 25 Oct. 1838. Served as constable at Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois. Drum major in Nauvoo Legion band, 1841. Appointed Nauvoo city marshal pro tem, 1841 and 1842. Member of Nauvoo Masonic Lodge. Served as coroner, 1842–ca. 1846, in Nauvoo. Ordained a high priest by George Miller, 24/25 Sept. 1843, in Nauvoo. Arrested for destruction of Nauvoo Expositor press, 1844. Arrived in Salt Lake Valley, July 1847. Helped establish settlements at Utah and Sanpete counties. Served as interpreter in meetings between Indian tribes and settlers. Died at Salt Lake City.
