Cowles, Ralph

Biography

16 May 1792–1 Aug. 1869. Teacher, surveyor, auditor, jeweler. Born in New Hartford, Litchfield Co., Connecticut. Son of Asa Cowles and Sibyl Merrill. Moved to Chardon, Geauga Co., Ohio, July 1811. Elected clerk for Burlington Township (later Claridon Township), Geauga Co., 7 Apr. 1817. Served as Geauga Co. auditor, 1818–1821, 1827–1835, 1839–1845. Married Delia Benton, 20 Aug. 1818, in Geauga Co. Served in various capacities for Geauga Co. Agricultural Society. Appointed counselor in Geauga Co. Anti-Slavery Society, 11 Sept. 1838. Served as recorder at trial proceedings of Alpheus C. Russell v. JS et al., Mar. 1844, in Painesville, Geauga Co. Moved to Cleveland, by 1850. Elected trustee for Society of Savings, 1867–1868. Died in Cleveland.
